started to see this popup today... not sure what it means... please see attachment

That appears to be an XML related error.
Either a macro which does some XML processing is causing an error, or if it is just happening without running a script could be related to the newsfeed which is the only place I can think of where XML is parsed by the software other than by script functions.
I just checked that there is no issue with the newsfeed and it is working fine here.
What happens when you do Help/Newsfeed. Is it still happening? Which version are you running?
